A Thai Customer Asked: Can a Parking Lift Protect a Car During a Flood?
On September 26, 2026, we received a WhatsApp inquiry from a customer in Thailand.
At first, it looked like a normal parking lift inquiry.
But the customer’s requirement was different.
He told us:
“Just lifting to protect the car when flood situation.”
He was not mainly looking for additional parking spaces.
His idea was simple: when flooding occurs, lift the car high enough to keep it above the floodwater.
We have received similar inquiries from other markets before, including a UK parking equipment distributor. So this is not the first time we have discussed using a parking lift for flood protection.
However, every project is different, especially when the existing building has limited space.
The Customer Was Looking for a Simple Solution
The customer did not ask for a complicated automated parking system.
He wanted to use a parking lift to raise the vehicle when a flood situation occurs.
This changes the way we look at the project.
For a normal parking project, we usually focus on questions such as:
- How many cars need to be parked?
- How much parking space can be created?
- What is the required lifting height?
- What is the vehicle capacity?
For a flood-protection application, another question becomes more important:
How high does the vehicle actually need to be lifted?
The answer depends on the expected floodwater level at the customer’s location.
The Flood Level Determines the Required Lifting Height
A parking lift does not necessarily need to raise the vehicle as high as possible.
The first thing we need to know is the expected floodwater level.
For example, if floodwater is expected to reach approximately 500 mm above the garage floor, the required lifting height will be different from a location where water may reach 1,000 mm.
The design should consider:
Expected Floodwater Level
The expected maximum floodwater depth is the starting point for determining the required lifting height.
Vehicle Dimensions and Weight
The vehicle’s height, weight and ground clearance all affect the final design.
H3: Available Ceiling Height
The total vertical space must accommodate the platform, vehicle and required clearance.
Foundation and Equipment Conditions
The foundation, anchor system, electrical components and corrosion protection also need to be considered according to the site conditions.
The Customer’s Ceiling Height Was Only 2.7 m
The customer told us:
“From the floor to ceiling is 2.7 m.”
He was already considering modifying the ceiling to create a gap for the platform when it was raised.
This immediately created another engineering question.
The issue was no longer simply:
“Can the parking lift raise the car?”
We also needed to consider:
“How high can the vehicle and platform actually go inside this building?”
A 2.7 m ceiling can place a practical limit on the lifting height, especially when the vehicle itself is relatively tall.
The final design therefore needs to consider the complete vertical dimension:
Floor → Platform → Vehicle → Ceiling
There needs to be sufficient clearance between the vehicle and the building structure.
A Lower Lifting Height May Be Enough
For flood protection, higher does not automatically mean better.
If the expected flood level is relatively low, a moderate lifting height may already provide the required protection.
For example, if the customer expects approximately 1 m of floodwater, the design can be developed around that requirement rather than automatically choosing a 3 m or 4 m lifting height.
This can be particularly important in buildings with limited ceiling height.
A customized lifting height may help balance:
- Flood protection requirements
- Vehicle height
- Building height
- Platform position
- Equipment cost
- Installation conditions
The goal is not to lift the car as high as possible. The goal is to lift the car high enough for the actual site conditions.
The Parking Lift Is Still a Parking Lift
One thing we find interesting about this application is that the equipment does not necessarily need to become a completely different type of machine.
A parking lift normally has one main purpose:
To raise a vehicle.
In a conventional parking application, we raise the vehicle to create another parking space.
In this application, we raise the vehicle for a different reason:
To keep the vehicle above floodwater.
The equipment may therefore be based on an existing parking lift design, while the lifting height, surface treatment, electrical protection and other details are considered according to the flood-prone environment.
What About the Parking Lift Itself?
Protecting the vehicle is only one part of the problem.
If floodwater can reach the equipment, the parking lift itself also needs to be considered.
Surface Treatment
Components exposed to water and humid environments need appropriate corrosion protection.
For example, hot-dip galvanizing can be considered for suitable steel components depending on the project requirements.
Electrical Components
The location and protection of the motor, control box, switches and other electrical components need to be considered carefully.
The electrical system should not simply be assumed to be suitable for direct exposure to floodwater.
Foundation
The existing concrete foundation needs to be checked before installation.
The required foundation depends on the equipment configuration, loads, anchor system and site conditions.
Drainage and Recovery
The site should also consider how floodwater will enter and leave the parking area.
After flooding, the equipment should be inspected before normal operation resumes.
This Is a Preliminary Project, Not a Completed Installation
It is important to make one thing clear.
This Thai project is currently a customer inquiry and preliminary design discussion, not a completed installation.
We are checking the suitable configuration based on the customer’s requirements, including:
- Flood protection purpose
- Available ceiling height of approximately 2.7 m
- Required lifting height
- Vehicle dimensions and weight
- Platform configuration
- Corrosion protection
- Overall project cost
The final design will depend on the actual site conditions and technical requirements.
A Different Reason for Using a Parking Lift
Most customers come to us because they want to park more cars in limited space.
This project reminded us that a parking lift can also solve a very different problem.
The customer’s requirement was essentially:
There is a flood risk. I want to lift my car before the water reaches it.
That sounds simple.
But to design the right solution, we still need to look carefully at the flood level, vehicle, platform, ceiling height, foundation and equipment protection.
For a flood-protection project, the most important question is not:
“How high can the parking lift go?”
It is:
“How high does the car need to be lifted at this particular site?”
Looking for a Parking Lift for Flood Protection?
If you are considering a parking lift specifically to protect vehicles from flooding, you can send us:
- Expected floodwater depth
- Vehicle type and weight
- Available floor area
- Ceiling height
- Required lifting height, if known
- Indoor or outdoor installation
- Photos or drawings of the installation area
Our engineering team can check a suitable parking lift configuration based on the actual project conditions.
